The Two Gospels

bibles.jpgGospel of Salvation: Salvation is an event. Getting people to say the sinner's prayer and become conforming churchgoers. Evangelistic crusades and rallies. Door-to-door evangelism. Church buildings and cathedrals and auditoriums. Programmes. Activities. Truth is a set of propositions. Street evangelism. Altar calls. Fragmented. Other-worldly and disconnected from present realities. Salvation for human souls. People come to the church. Sees the church against the world. Control. The bible is all that matters. Black and white. Salvation for getting into heaven. Deficient.

Gospel of the Kingdom: Salvation is a process. Friendship. Community. Relationships. Inspiring people to live the life of the Kingdom. Holistic. Both this-worldly and other-worldly. People. Salvation for all of creation. Incarnational embodiment. Salvation for establishing the Kingdom of God. Generous. Truth is a person. Jesus is all that matters. Sees the church as a friend of the world. Facilitation and freedom. The church goes to the world. Black, white and often fuzzy. The Gospel of Christ.

so we can't have a both/and on this? So, the Gospel of the Kingdom is "Black, white and often fuzzy." Can we have color?

HAHAHAHA, thanks for the heads up, Sivin. Naughty naughty...

Hi. Touchy subject I think. While agreeing about the gospel of the kingdom, it was through the preaching of the gospel of salvation that I came to know Jesus, so i am a bit conflicted here. But I think I know where you are coming from...Would love to chat about this over coffee.

Hey there! :) The Gospel of Salvation is not in itself wrong per se. It is just deficient. But yes, chat over coffee! That's a very Kingdom thing to do, ya know!

You have Gospel in the best sense of the words.

But allow me to throw in another thought..

Besides fuzzy, black and white, Gospel needs to keep its shocking effect. One can never claim to have fully understood the Gospel. It always should keep you on edge and never satisfied...;P

It is always easy to articulate an observed "wrong, lack, or deficiency". But to actualise the "righter, better, or truer" way is really another reality, isn't it?

Showing it is more effective in just talking about it. But when we can't show it and we still need to say it, let us say it with great humility. Knowledge can really puff up. Many in the "mega" may not have time or heart to listen, but there are many who are willing to be shown a better way. Let's talk to those who are "doing" it [however wrong they are judged] and not just among those who are only talking about it.

Peace to all.

Hi Pastor Luke! Thanks for your comments! I'm sure that many of us, in whatever context we're living and in our various communities, are trying to embody the Gospel of the Kingdom in the best way we know how. May God keep showing us and leading us in the better way.

"there are many who are willing to be shown a better way." I believe in that, as I do hope for more. I was once like that and I'm still one :-)Thus, when another person is before us, it's not so much about whether we are from a "mega", "micro" or whaetever context. The person before us is a human being whom is engaged in a conversation that I believe the Spirit is hovering over. That's good news too ...

Hi Sivin, man of peace. Ya mega, micro or mini are bad distincitions. But, isn't it always easier to listen to the negative constructive criticism after hearing some positive affirmations? The first and second paragraphs of the post need not be mutually exclusive. "CRASH" REMEMBER?

I affirm that the first and second paragraphs of this post need not necessarily be mutually exclusive (although they need not necessarily be compatible either). It is not mentioned anywhere within this post that the two paragraphs are mutually exclusive. In fact, at the end of the first paragraph, the word "deficient" is employed, which indicates "inadequacy" or "insufficiency", not "wrongness". Hence, the fact that it is actually even PERCEIVED to come across as mutually exclusive says something of our own pre-conditioned linear hermeneutics, doesn't it? :P
