Bandung, INDONESIA

In December 2004, just before Christmas, I was sent to Institut Anglikan Indonesia (Anglican Institute of Indonesia) to conduct a week's worth of lectures in Christian Theology for the twelve resident students there...yes, in the Indonesian language! (Well, I can manage some of that...no problem.)

IAI Front Yard

This is the front yard of the school. It is housed in a rather large bungalow building with good facilities. Twelve students are accepted for each intake, and they are required to live in for six months in order to experience a rigorous discipline of spiritual formation. Yeah, I know...but let's just admire the architecture of the building, shall we?

IAI Signboard

This is the signboard of the Institute hanging on the wall just as you enter the doorway. It says "Institut Anglikan Indonesia" with the address of the premises below it.

Lectures in Progress

Lectures in progress. The lecturer (me) is seated because some serious discussion on a pastoral issue is taking place. "When I commit myself to a denomination, is it the tradition that I am embracing or the institution itself that I am serving?" Tough one...

Farmers at Work

This is the view opposite the school, where we can see farmers working in the field. Wow.

Christmas Celebration

A Christmas celebration in pseudo-Western style. I was amazed but not amused.

Tangkuban Parahu

This is an active volcano called Tangkuban Parahu. Just several months upon my return from Bandung, news was broadcasted that this volcano was threatening to erupt and many people were evicted to safety. A friend of mine, a pastor, has his house very close to the foot of this volcano. But I wasn't really worried for him, honestly...he's quite wealthy, you see.

The Volcano Mouth

Staring right into the mouth of the volcano. If you observe clearly, you will see fumes rising from the hot water.

The Mountaintop

View from the mountain top. I love mountains, not merely because I am Sherman on the Mount, but also because being on mountains always brings me a tranquil sense of connection with myself and with creation.
