I was in Johannesburg from 15 October to 14 November 2005. Below is a sample of pictures that were taken throughout my stay there.
The little "challet" that will be my home for the next one month. It is called a "lapa". The inside of the lapa. It contains two single beds, a desk and chair, and a cupboard. The lapa also has an attached toilet that is absolutely clean and delightfully fragrant.
A meat-seller and a busker in the flea market which opens only on Sundays.
A barbeque - in South Africa it is called braai. Chicken, beef, lamb...and those things on the far right are not what you may think they are! They are African sausages. Looks can be deceiving!
Gavin cooking a dish called Potjie (pronounced poy-kee) in two iron-cast pots. It is a mix of vegetables and meat (in this case, lamb neck). In one of the pots, he even baked bread as the top layer of the dish.
I attended the worship service at St Monica's Anglican Church one of the Sundays. The standard Anglican liturgy has become so beautifully immersed in the African culture! Just listening to how some parts of the liturgy are sung in various African languages warms the heart and draws one to a consciousness of Christ's Lordship of all nations.
We went to the Vaal River, the second largest river in South Africa. Camped there overnight. As you can see, we took a boat along with us. The four of us brought some inflatable mattresses and sleeping bags, lots of food and some collapsible chairs to the bank of Vaal River. It's fun doing this in South Africa, since it is not as hot as Malaysia and the humidity level is very low.
Yes, it is as you see. That's me, trying to steer the boat along the Vaal River. Caused a couple of accidents to happen, but no human lives were sacrificed in the process. The accidents didn't cause the boat to deflate either.
Some sightings from the South African safari...
An African sunset...beauty that only God can create. He paints the sky with his sacred hand.
The shape of poverty in South Africa...
And still the children smile.
